I have great hair

If you know me personally, you might be surprised to hear that.  Let me tell you how I came up with it.

A couple of weeks ago, I mentioned to my sister that I was in the market for a new hairstyle.  She smirked and answered,  “I feel like you’re always in the market for a new hairstyle.  You’ve never really nailed it.”

As I thought about it, it’s totally true!  I’ve never really had a hairstyle that I loved.  And yet, looking back on pictures, I think most of my past hairstyles were nice;  I just never really love the one I have.

I realized that I have been expecting too much from a hairstyle. I have had this subconscious idea that if I found the right hairstyle, I would be magically transformed into someone cuter and more fashionable.  It sounds ridiculous when I say it out loud!  So of course every time I go to get my hair cut, I come away disappointed. It’s always still me in the mirror, just with slightly different hair.

As I became aware of my subconscious thinking, I decided it was not serving me well at all!  It was keeping me feeling unsatisfied.

So… I decided to not think that anymore.  No more thinking that I never really like my hair.  No more wishing a haircut could transform me. Instead, I decided to think the thought “I have great hair!”  When I purposely looked for evidence of that, my brain was able to find enough proof to back my theory.

And guess what! Nobody can tell me otherwise. (Well, nobody has tried to tell me otherwise.  But if they did I wouldn’t believe them!)  I get to choose to believe whatever I want about my hair.  And I’ve decided I have great hair!

And just like that I feel more satisfied, and better about myself. Thoughts are powerful things. Choose yours carefully!
